What is BPA?
Bisphenol-A is an ingredient used to make polycarbonate. In recent months, there has been increasing consumer demand for a bottle that is not made with Bisphenol-A (BPA), and CamelBak is proud to introduce BPA-free bottles with the same great properties customers have come to expect from polycarbonate: vibrant color, clarity, durability, dishwasher-safe, and with no residual taste. As of the end of April 2008, the entire CamelBak bottle line will be available in BPA-Free materials in North America.

What are phthalates?
Phthalates (pronounced thal-ates) are a component added to some plastics to make them soft and pliable. None of CamelBak's bottles have ever contained phthalates.

What is the BPA-free Better Bottle made from?
The CamelBak Better Bottle line is made from a new copolyester polymer called Tritan, made by Eastman. It offers the same great qualities that we have come to expect from polycarbonate bottles and is 100 percent BPA-Free. The Big Bite Valve is made of medical-grade silicone for long life and taste-free performance.

About CamelBak
CamelBak is the originator and world leader in hands-free hydration systems. The first CamelBak products proved to be very popular among mountain bikers and motocross riders, because it allowed them to drink without taking their hands off of the handlebars in technical terrain. The product began to cross over into other sports when scientific studies showed athletes drank more fluids and performed better when they wore a CamelBak. Since then, athletes from an ever-growing list of sports and activities use CamelBak hydration systems for their convenience and performance benefits.

In addition to cycling, CamelBak has Hands-Free Hydration systems for hiking, running, snowboarding and skiing. CamelBak's state-of-the-art packs and hydration systems have benefited athletes, outdoorsmen, and soldiers around the world. While CamelBak has grown tremendously since the early days, one thing hasn't changed: CamelBak still believes in the performance advantage that proper hydration delivers for just about any activity. The privately-held company is headquartered in Petaluma, California.

4 out of 5 stars What you'd expect from CamelBak   March 22, 2010
Lorraine Cape (California)
I want to get to the point: There are a few major sticking points to this type of water bottle that may make or break someone's decision to own one. I personally own two 1-liter bottles and one 0.5-liter bottle of this style.

1) The mouthpiece attracts dirt, lint, and hair like crazy. This is my biggest issue with the bottles, since I typically am using the bottle everywhere I go and there is no cap to protect the mouthpiece. I rinse the mouthpiece at least twice a day since I am constantly finding little fuzzballs or dust or whatever it is the earth's atmosphere flings at me that day. It's obviously not a breaking point for me as I own three of them, but I will definitely admit I WILL take a different type of water bottle into any setting I'm afraid is too dirty for these bottles.

2) The 1-liter size is too thick for a lot of standard water bottle holders. I initially traded up from my half liter to full liter bottles in order to take them on bike rides with me, but it turns out that they were too fat to fit in my holsters. I should have checked the dimensions of the bottle before buying them, but I never had an issue with my bottle cages before. The base of the liter bottles is about 3.5 inches in diameter. I opted for the slimmer Nalgene bottles to take on rides with me due to this.

3) If you are not familiar with a bite-valve, you should be aware that this means you have to apply pressure on the mouthpiece and suck water up through the straw. It sounds easy enough, but I have had friends that could not use my water bottles while working out because it was too difficult to suck up water while out of breath. If you intend on using these bottles while exerting yourself, this could cause an issue when you're trying to rehydrate.

4) Depending on the size of your bottle, the straw does not always reach to the bottom of the container. It makes it a little frustrating to sip those last few drops of fluid out, but it was nothing that bothersome for me personally. I've been told this has been fixed in newer models, too.

With all of this said, I still absolutely love these bottles. I take them with me hiking, to class, to the gym, and they're my study partner at home. I have a bit of an oral fixation in where I love to chew things, and these encourage me to drink more water because I'm constantly messing with the mouth piece.

Not to mention, they are gorgeous bottles, leak-proof (water CAN still leak through the mouth piece if "open", be sure to snap down the valve when you aren't drinking!), a hook that comfortably fits a finger or two for carrying, sturdy, and BPA-free. I'd recommend these bottles for anyone not bothered by the aforementioned "flaws". Just be sure to wash your bottles and mouth piece frequently so as to not encounter the dreaded mold problems other reviewers mentioned.

I had never used a CamelBak before, so I was wary about the biting down part. It works fine, just as it is supposed to. I have to pinch the lips of the bite valve together sometimes to get it to not leak, and I feel like I am using a sippy cup.
I think it would work great in a more active setting than I am using right now.

4 out of 5 stars Great bottle! A little too big though...   March 16, 2010
Mary H. Welker-tolla (Woodland, CA)
I love the Camelbak bottles. I never go anywhere without them, seriously! One of the best features is that they maintain the coolness of the water fairly well. I leave mine in the car a lot and the first sip (that was in the spout) is hot, but after that, pretty much the temp. that I put it in there as. A very good trait in the CA valley where it gets to be 110 degrees every summer! However I didn't realize that the 1 Liter was a little bigger than the ones I already had. It doesn't fit in most cup holders (like my car's) alas. Other than that, it's wonderful. Easy to clean, Easy to sip from on the go and keep hydrated. I'll remember to get the .75 liter ones in the future. The only reason I had to order 2 was because over the last 2 years I lost a couple :( But the ones I still have just keep going and going.... :) Oh, as a side note, this is not the best bottle to take backpacking. Car camping, yes, but backpacking, I'd stick to just a bladder and hose (like Platypus).

5 out of 5 stars love love love this bottle   March 15, 2010
keysgirl (Key Largo)
Not much to say that has not been said in the 500+ reviews of this product but this is my 3rd one because I wanted a smaller size. They hold up extremely well, I have had the other two for ~4yrs and one has gotten hard to suck out of because the little flap on the one way valve that lets air in as you drink (in the center of the cap next to the screw)is not working right. Not sure what the deal is b/c it looks fine. I used to be able to clean it to make it work better but that does not help anymore. Regardless that is after tons of use over 4 years so I don't have a problem saying it is time to replace it (plus they were not BPA free back then)!

4 out of 5 stars What more can you ask for?   March 9, 2010
J. Kaufman (U.S.)
I've owned this bottle for a couple months now and I have no complaints. Well, strike that, I have one complaint: the cap has been known to leak unless you close it with a very precise amount of torque - which you will learn in time.

I've heard that some people have had problems with mold growing inside the bite valve but I haven't experienced that, and to be honest, I haven't cleaned it since the day I started using it. I purchased an extra bite valve (which also came with 3 extra straws), just in case, but I don't think I'll need it for a very long time.

Otherwise, the water flows well, it's fairly durable (I've dropped it dozens of times) and attractive, and the water tastes only of water, not plastic.

I'm happy with my purchase.
