If you already own the previous versions then getting this as an upgrade is probably not worthwhile. There is a lot of capability crammed into [...] worth of software. You should expect to have a reasonably powerful computer and also to encounter the occasional... incident. However, if you are looking for a reasonably priced set of tools for video and image editing and can accept the challanges then this set can fit the bill.
The best thing you can do is to visit the Adobe site and download the demos to see if this is what you need.
Premier Elements (Video):
Let's start off with what's not so good...
- This is not as feature-rich as the Sony and Corel <$100 alternatives.
- Might not be stable in all configurations. Other reviewers have reported hangs and crashes. While I haven't seen this even though I'm using an NVIDIA graphics card (identified in other reviews as the culprit) it's still a possibility. PLEASE SEE THE END OF THIS REVIEW for tips (from Adobe) on improving the stability.
- Like all other video processing software pachages, this runs better on faster hardware. Don't consider it on a 1.6 GHz laptop unless you have a lot of spare time on your hands. (That said, the interface is well suited to a laptop's smaller screen.)
What is good:
- Integrates nicely with Photoshop Elements 8.
- More user friendly than the Sony and Corel <$100 alternatives.
- Even though there are fewer features than the competition what is there is very well done and may certaily be all that's needed.
Photoshope Elements (Images):
Firstly, if you don't already own Photoshop Elements and have any desire to quickly and effectively enhance or modify a digital image then go push "But it Now" and I'll wait for you to get back.
However, if you already own the previous version then the question is if it's worth the cost for the additional features. The answer lies in how you handle your workflow. There are certainly a lot of "improved" features but the big deal in this version is the organizer. That's not an issue if you typically shoot some pictures, pick out the ones you want to print or send to a web page, and then move on with your life. However, if you maintain a library of 10,000 images and need to find specific shots based on a number of criteria like subject, date shot, location, your rating, lens used, etc, then you need some kind of organizational capability. (The pros and other people wanting to sound important call this Digital Asset Management or DAM.) That's what's been significantly enhanced in PSE8.
FWIW, I prefer to use Acd Systems ACDSee Pro Photo Manager 2.5 - Windows for DAM (I want to sound important) and use PSE for when I have to move bits around.
TIPS FROM ADOBE for improving Premier Elements stability:
To ensure an accurate review of Adobe Premiere Elements 8, you must install the latest updates after you have installed your software. To download and install updates automatically, launch Adobe Premiere Elements 8 and go to Help > Updates.
Updates can also be downloaded and installed manually by visiting [...], then select Adobe Premiere Elements for Windows in the drop down menu, and click the link for the Version 8.0.1 update.
If your computer uses an NVIDIA graphics card, you must also download and install the latest driver for your card from [...]. For other graphics cards, please update your driver from the manufacturer's website.
To find out what type of graphics card you have:

I purchased this bundle a couple of months age to run on a windows xp 32 bit machine and it was awful. I was able to edit videos in premiere for the most part. It would crash from time to time but I wouldn't say it made the software unusable (at least not on my machine). I recently built a new machine running a quad core cpu, windows 7 ultimate 64bit, 4GB of DDR3 RAM (soon to be 8GB), Gigabyte motherboard (790FXTA-UD5), ATI Radeon HD 5770 video card, and Corsair 650watt power supply. Since installing premier 8 on my new machine it performs 10 times better. I typically use ASUS motherboards and NVIDIA graphics cards but this time around I decided not to be brand loyal and just go with what works best for my setup. I'm glad I did. I've had maybe 1 crash since using windows 7 and that's using the program everyday for the past 2 1/2 weeks. Specs are important when running software like this. This software is simple on the surface but has a good amount of useful features (for me at least). That one crash was entirely my fault. And when it did crash I just submitted the error report, opened premiere again, and I was back in action with no further problems. Background rendering is still annoying but playback is still smooth.
Verify that your video card and motherboard's chipset are compatible. That is not the same as meeting the system requirements. You may have plenty of power to install the program but not enough to actually run the program. Once you open the package you can't return it.
I wouldn't recommend this program to anyone whose PC has:
- Less than 3.0Ghz CPU clock speed
- CPU with less than 2 cores
- Less than 4GBs of RAM (this may not be premiere pro but it's still pretty heavy and will exhaust mid-low end PCs)
I'm not trying to insult anyone's setup or PC. This is just my opinion based on running this software on 2 different machines. One, running windows xp pro 32bit with a 3.4Ghz AMD cpu, 4GB DDR2 RAM, 550watt power supply, NVIDIA 7600GT video card. The other one, windows 7 ultimate 64bit, 3.2 AMD quad core cpu, 4GB DDR3 RAM, 650watt power supply, and an ATI HD 5770 video card. I ran dual monitors on both setups. I still think the performance issues I was having in xp was due to the "ancient" video card I was running and my overwhelmed power supply. My new setup runs flawlessly and makes me want to switch to CS4.
Just surf the web for specific hardware components that don't work with this program and either avoid them or replace them prior to investing in this software.

Premiere Elements 8, Not Bad for the needs of an average FAMILY .........
BUT ............If you're using an AVCHD camcorder I wouldn't buy this item, try something else like Sony Vegas that is known to be compatible with the AVCHD format.
I really REALLY wanted to like this bundled software but I have to say that as for the Adobe Premiere Elements 8 software, it really has some significant design FLAWS ... It continually freezes and crashes on my new 2009 2.66 Quad-core computer system. I would recommend anyone serious about Windows based video editing to check out Sony's Vegas 9.0 Pro. It hasn't' ever crashed on me while in the middle of an editing session and has proved itself reliable over & over again... At the very least before buying this at least go to the Adobe website & check out the trial download first. Read the info on the Adobe forums, (depending on your computer system) there are some easy fixes, DEPENDING on what is causing your problem.....
Adobe Photoshop ....
Now there are many ups and downs of Adobe PhotoShop Elements 8, the first improvement is the buttons on the welcome screen "Edit" and "Organize". This is a DRASTIC improvement from the previous version! It allows you to organize you photos and edit them at the same time, so when you get back from your family vacation, you can edit all your pictures,(which they have some really cool effects, like color, contrast, and lighting adjustments, and it can even whiten teeth! Eat your heart out Crest white Strips!! LOL ) and then sort out your pictures accordingly! Now the flaws of this program is that it takes F-O-R-E-V-E-R to edit multiple pictures! I mean get ready to have "Loading Editor Workspace" burnt into your screen! So the summary of Adobe Photo shop Elements 8 is that it's great for editing single photos, but for anything more, look for a different program. IMO :-)
