Amazon.com Log onto an India.Arie lyrics page and you won't come away expecting an easy-breezy listen--here's an artist, remember, who made a name for herself by declaring her disdain for silicone and Cristal on her 2001 debut. What's consistently a revelation for new recruits to the Arie camp, then, is how good the music makes you feel. No matter how heavy the subject matter (and it still gets heavy--God surfaces in the first verse of "Intro," the prayerful opening song), she delivers it in such a way that it ends up feeling like homespun wisdom--accessible, cloudless, and heartening. Testimony, no minor R&B/soul achievement, is full of such earth-mother moments: "The Heart of the Matter," a cover of the Don Henley song, is what a hug might sound like if it were music; "There's Hope" reminds tunefully that you don't have to pay to smile ("You better thank God for that"); "Private Party" points up the benefits of getting naked before a mirror and liking what you see (impossible as that sounds, it'll seem less so after listening); and "I Am Not My Hair," a sexy thumper featuring Akon, celebrates not the hair, not the skin, but "the soul that lives within." Musically, "Testament" is a testament to the benefits of branching out; in addition to gospel and hip-hop, you'll also find country and pure pop forays here. All of it works, and works wondrously. Arie may be the Oprah of the music world: she's spiritual, she's got her head screwed on straight, and whatever she touches turns to gold. Or at least it ought to. --Tammy La Gorce

Impressive, enlightning and indisputably INCREDIBLE album!! December 13, 2008 anthony tucker (ghettos' of Detroit) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
India has really done an astonishing job with this album!! It contains everything that the mature music fan could desire in an album!! Thoughtfulness, originality and mellow, relaxing melodies...All of the songs deal with isues that everyone can readily relate to"These Eyes"is a simply wonderful song dealing with unexpected emotional dissapointments in life.."The Heart of the Matter"has India seeking to discover the very essence of the situation involving a heartbreak..."Good Mourning"with its' SUPERBLY clever title is a good melancholy song about getting over emotional trauma.."Private Party"is a really uplifting song about celebrating(and developing a love of)self(irregardless as to how any and everyone else feels about you!! India so wisely(and correctly)points out:"This is NOT(about)ego or vanity,I'm just celebrating ME!!"Personally,as a person who grew up DEVOID of any self-esteem/self-respect,I don't see ANY crime in doing that!!! India also cites' the FOLLY in changing WHO you are in order to get a mate!! For me this is a really ASTOUNDING topic(that I do empathize with)here, because I had to give myself a"private party"some years ago(because I formerly ALLOWED others' opinions of me,to actually cause me to not love myself!!)and ever since my"party" I've immutably REFUSED to be affected by all the scorn being heaped upon me by others!!" I simply"drink-up"/absorb all this scorn like Job is described as doing in Job 34:7!!!A GREAT song about developing self-esteem and respect for yourself!!Better People"presents a very simple/logical solution to creating overall better understanding between people in life.." "There's Hope"is a fantastic mood-uplifting ultra-positive song.."Wings of Forgiveness"carres a SUPREMELY important message about the lost"art"of excusing affronts you've endured from others!"I am not my hair"with its"appearance means VERY little"message should be declared the motto of the decade!!"I Choose"is a great song about standing tall and taking COMMAND of your life..I absolutely LOVED this line:"I can't live for everybody,I gotta live MY life for ME!!" AMEN,to that India!! As a born-again Christian I DEFINELY have to agree with this following line:"My PAST don't DICTATE who I am!!" this song is VERY encouraging and positive...The most incredible track on this album FULL of incredible songs is actually"hidden"..."This Too Shall Pass"is a song depicting someone enduring a DEVASTATING heartbreak that appears to be(and feels like)the END of the world to this poor soul!! The only"life-line" that this person can grab hold of is the Biblical words that instills hope into a despairing mind:"This too shall pass."The words she utilizes to convey the depth of her pain are the epitome of PROFOUNDITY(and cleverly appropriate:"My emotions are BANKRUPT!!"..."My heart is in a MILLION pieces!!"..."When night falls,so do my TEARS!!"..."I'm an AMATEUR at love!"..."Im trying my BEST to"move on",but the PAIN just keeps"singing"me songs!!" "My head and my heart are at WAR,'cause love aint happening the way I WANT it!!" "All of a sudden I REALIZE that it only hurts WORSE to"fight"it!!" "And I pray for QUIET in my head!" "That I can hear clearly WHAT God says!!" Amazingly India even surpasses the late, great Phyllis Hyman in the"sad-song"arena with this touching account of a thoroughly and completely"crushed"heart!! But the lesson however is crystal CLEAR to those who feel that there will be no tomorrow:"This TOO shall(eventually)PASS,and become nothing more than an unpleasant(gradually-fading)memory...A GREAT song that wraps up a STELLAR album!!

Inspirational! June 23, 2008 Music Maven (Capitola, CA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a highly personal CD that obviously took some time to write. The songs come from her heart and express the highs and lows of her personal growth. It is truly an inspirational CD to listen to!
