The Phantom Still Rocks November 23, 2008 J. Grinvalds (Nebraska) I grew up listening to a scratchy version of this album on my brother's phonograph. My siblings and I knew the songs by heart, my childhood favorite being "Goodbye, Eddie, Goodbye." Now that I'm older, "Faust" makes much, much more sense to me. While some of the tracks are dated, and might not make much sense until you see the movie, the music is still wonderful and somehow magical.
Its as old as ME! July 2, 2008 Adrian Tan (Singapore) I was born in 1974, the same year the music for Phantom was recorded. MY Uncle had a cassette tape of the soundtrack and I listened to it over and over again when I was growing up. I then saw the movie on TV during the 80's . Fortune smiled and I actually saw a CD of the soundtrack during the 90s and I actually bought 2! One for me and one for the Uncle whose cassette I had borrowed and played to oblivion. Good music stays with you your whole life I guess, and trust me this is GOOD MUSIC. Get it!
There is something mysterious about these songs May 28, 2008 Robert Siletzky (Elon, North Carolina) If you are looking for this recording you probably have already seen the movie. If you haven't seen the movie--do it NOW! I originally bought the vinyl after seeing the movie when it first came out. This was the first and for many years the only soundtrack I bought (the next was for the French movie, Diva). The music is catchy and the lyrics are deeper than one expects from "pop" music. I find I think about them often--as if they were poems I had memorized. My favorite lyrics: "All the devils that disturbed me, and the angels that defeated them somehow, come together in me now." But as I wrote that I thought of other lyrics just as good. Time to stop writing and put on the CD :-).
Absolutely Paradise April 29, 2008 Stevie Bloom This cult classic from the heady early 70's was in a neck and neck all out war as to who would become THE cult classic of that era at the time. It was a very cut throat move over both producers, directors, etc. The quintessential talents of the supremely gifted Mr. Paul Williams, who has trekked the dialogue, direction, production, and all so much more importantly, the WRITING of the songs, and the dialogue that is the diamond studded backdrop for all of his incredible movies. Mr. Williams, as usual, in his top notch form, had once again decided to go neck and neck against the HUGELY successful cult classic in theaters at that very same time, "The Rocky Horror Picture Show", another masterpiece that has lived on for generations, and has no sign of letting up, or letting down the expectations of his audience. For such a courageous feat, especially knowing that "Rocky" was already a nod for the "Cult Classic Hall of Fame". (No, dear reader, I haven't the slightest clue if there is such a place, though I doubt we will have such access into the private life of our beloved Paul Williams. This man has SO much potential, and especially what has catapulted him to superstardom is that. As for the movie, this classic falls upon the central them what the 7 deadly sins, and their consequences on the human spirit in the long run. Greed, ambition, lust, selfishness, etc. The unwitting hero of the movie is a mild mannered, yet extraordinary musician, who after a terrible accident while attempting to dismantle some of Swan's (Paul Williams delightfully sinister music producer who has sold his soul to the devil in exchange for his massively popular opulent existence as the founder/manager of the new club, "The Paradise". The choreography, also influenced by Williams, as well as just about every of facet of this gem, absolutely MUST be recognized for the classic work that has been so painstakingly weaved-the miracle of life, the miracle of death, redemption, revenge, forgiveness, all of these and more come out of this magnificent piece of work. Sadly, it has not received the cult following, but even more that 30 years later, people are STILL discovering for the first time what a truly incredible piece of work that Mr. Williams painstakingly has weaved into an immortal living, moving mural of art, that everyone must see, to be able to see a part of themselves, and what humanity is capable of. Now, over 30 years ago, there would not have been a snowballs chance in Phoenix...er, hell, that this review would have been in the status it is today, if it had a snowflake of a chance to get it rolling. Again, the movies undertones of abuse, greed, and finally redemption comes SO strong, that it is virtually impossible to find the theme of the movie. In summary, (finally!), I highly recommend this thought provoking provides its audience. As I always say, as I am one of, if not THE most critical of movie critics, that you must "see it to believe it." Trust me...:)
