"Can't Go Back Now" is an excellent example of what can happen when two very talented songwriters join forces...not only musically but also by marriage. Deb and Steve (The Weepies) are a duo in perfect harmony...the magic shows not only in this song, but also on the rest of this album (Hideaway) and on their 2006 release "Say I Am You".
After you download this, you'll notice there is a bit of 70's influence in the way this was recorded...with brushwork for the small amount of percussion and reverbs on the vocals that take you back in time...and man, what vocals! This song showcases some of the best harmonizing I've heard in a long time. Everything about the song is super, with a beautiful melody, intelligent lyrics, and even a hooky chorus.
What I really like about this free download is that it uncovers a gem as far as finding new music goes...if you go back to The Weepies previous material you'll find songs that will blow you away...take a listen to the first four songs of "Say I Am You", and I guarantee you'll have chills running down your spine.
To me, Steve has a hint of James Taylor in his voice, while Deb sounds at times like Shawn Colvin...making a wonderful collaboration, both vocally and from a songwriting standpoint.
My only complaint is that this song is just too darn short!
