Best of the bunch! March 12, 2010 Linda In Wonderland (New York, USA) Agree with most of the reviews. This is my fave for fashion. Hard hitting and getz to the point. Not too overly sexy?? If you know what I mean.
Worth a Subscription March 3, 2010 Gellybean (Northern VA) Bazaar is a fashion mag worth the subscription. Some of the other fashion mags are hit and miss or are only good for the March or September issues. Bazaar on the other hand, each month is always worth more than one look.
Mixed Feelings, but Still Worthwhile December 3, 2009 abysinth (chicago suburbs) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I do enjoy this magazine although I have mixed feelings about it, too. I've subscribed now for about half a year, and I look forward to receiving it. The articles, however, are pretty bad.
For example, there was an article about growing older written by a Harvard law graduate... and her insights were quite banal. It was insulting actually.
There was an article about a socialite from the 1980s who died of AIDS. The article showed some of the fashions that she wore in the 1980s. That article was good and also about fashion. But those kind of articles are rare.
The fashion spreads are hit-or-miss. Some are just outlandish and others are witty and fun. There was a fashion spread dedicated to a Trophy Wife which was tongue in cheek, but the fashions shown were quite wearable.
This magazine also promotes fur which I think is backwards. That's definitely a minus. I'm sure the fashion industry doesn't care about cruelty, but it's just distasteful to see that in a magazine.
There are a lot of ads, but sometimes the ad spreads are the highlight of the magazine because they showcase amazing fashion. There was a photo spread from Ferragamo that was divine. Whoever was the stylist on that shoot was brilliant! Also there was a great fashion spread from DKNY that I loved as well. They have been showing a lot of Levian jewelry which is a mid-range jewelry ($500- $3,000 range) and I think that jewelry is quite pretty.
There was this hideous LV ad featuring Madonna. But another celebrity Emma Watson was great in the Burberry ads. Very chic. So it is hit-or-miss with the stylists.
The price range on the clothing is high. Their cheap items are under $500. The expensive items are around $3,000 and up and that can be for one pair of shoes. The fashion budget is not in my price-range, but I don't use the magazine as a literal shopping guide. I use it to enjoy fashion and get some ideas. For example, they were showing a lot of booties (ankle boots) this Fall. Sure, I can't afford $1,500 boots, but I'm sure I can find something similar in my price range. I do enjoy many of the fashions showcased.
Also they give suggestions for fashion books to read. I haven't read any of their suggestions, but I like how they take fashion seriously and they have an expansive take on the fashion industry.
They have a section on interior design where some fashion designer will show off their home. Usually it's not that great though. Even though people have money, it doesn't mean that they can decorate or hire a good decorator. One of the owners of the Italian brand Tods was showing off his Paris apartment... hideous! Giant metal asiatic heads and 1970s "vintage" furniture... ick! Well, sometimes it's good for a laugh.
One of my favorite sections is called "Fabulous at Any Age"... I do enjoy seeing fashion pictures of very stylish older socialites. It's inspiring. I'm in my 30s, but I like looking at all the ages.
Overall, it's a mixed bag and certainly could be improved a lot, but I enjoy it and think it's certainly worth the low subscription price.
Quality Fashion Magazine October 8, 2009 A. Peel 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I love the fact that Bazaar is the fashion magazine for every woman. From your 20s to 70s, Bazaar helps you create looks that you will love, but that are also age relevant. How many fashion magazines go beyond 21? This is probably the only glossy that appeals to gen X and baby boomers. Bazaar is a classy fashion magazine that I would highly recommend!
