With a total weight of 5.1 ounces and slim measurements of 3.87 x 2.91 x 0.87 inches (WxHxD), the nuevi 350 is just right for the pocket or purse. A bright, 64,000-color display dominates the front of the device and a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels means that there's plenty of room for displaying map data and other elements of the device's interface. An SD memory card slot is provided for expansion software, such as a points of interest database, media files and electronic guides (see below). The flip-up antenna includes an MCX-type connector for connecting the unit to an external GPS antenna. Meanwhile, a powerful built-in speaker resides on the back of device. A built-in lithium ion battery will give you for to eight hours of battery life, depending on use. In addition to an AC charger, the unit also ships with a 12-volt power adapter for vehicle charging, as well as a windshield suction cup mount. Fortunately, Garmin has made it easy to interface with the nuevi 350's 700 megabytes of onboard memory, thanks to "plug-and-play" USB mass storage support. Just plug the device into your computer's USB port and you've got instantaneous access to all the audio books, music, photos, supplemental maps and other data on the nuevi 350's internal and SD card memory. The nuevi 350 is first and foremost a personal GPS device. Wherever you go -- in your car or on foot-- the device offers extremely accurate position data, thanks to a high-sensitivity integrated GPS receiver by SiRF and WAAS-enabled, 12-satellite reception. Combined with detailed maps of the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico the nuevi 350 provides automatic routing, turn-by-turn voice directions, and touchscreen control-- making it easy to find your way anywhere. Plus, the unique "text-to-speech" feature calls out turns by street name, and you can choose from either 2D or 3D mapping perspectives when you're viewing your route on the display. Additionally, the nuevi 350 is compatible with Garmin's GTM 10 FM TMC traffic receiver*, which allows users to avoid traffic tie-ups by simply pushing a button that will calculate a new route. As mentioned, the nuevi 350 comes packed with mapping data for North America, but you can can also load up your custom points of interest. Set up proximity alerts for school zones, safety cameras, and more using Garmin's free POI (points of interest) loader program (available from garmin.com).

Navigation is just part of the journey, and the nuevi 350 is one of the first devices to recognize that. The built-in "Travel Kit" offers an MP3 player, an audio book player from Audible.com, a jpeg-format picture viewer, a world travel clock with time zones, a currency converter, a measurement converter, and a calculator. In addition to the included travel tools, additional software add-ons are available, such as the Garmin Language Guide, with data provided by Oxford University Press. This software suite contains a multilingual word bank, phrase bank, and five bilingual dictionaries. The multilingual word bank and phrase bank supports nine languages and dialects, including American English, British English, French, German, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, European Portuguese, European Spanish, and Latin American Spanish. Now you can look up and translate more than 17,000 words or 20,000 phrases per language -- right in the palm of your hand. Through the unit's text-to-speech interface, users can get a spoken pronunciation of each entry in the word bank, along with gender and part of speech information. Another useful add-on software package, the Garmin Travel Guide, is loaded with information provided by Marco Polo. These guides put in-depth travel information such as reviews and recommendations for restaurants, tourist attractions, and more at your fingertips. The software allows you to navigate to an address or search points of interest-- places like hotels, restaurants, shopping, and tourist attractions. The nuevi 350 automatically calculates the fastest route and provides voice-prompted turn-by-turn directions along the way. The unit also audibly announces the name of upcoming streets-- letting you keep your eyes on the road while navigating through busy traffic and tricky roadways. And if you stray off course, the nuevi 350 automatically calculates the quickest way to get back on track. *Traffic services available only in select cities where RDS-TMC coverage exists. I bought my Garmin last month. Before my purchase, I already did a survey and realized that this model is a good one. Through my usage of more one month, it turns out to be perfect, from the display brightness to voice volume. This model did provide "safe mode" which means you can't operate the menu when the vehicle is moving. That's a very good reminding. Totally, I am very satisfied by this Garmin.

The Garmin nuvi 350, which I have only used for a few days now, does the job quite adequately and is easy to use. The hardware is very well designed. There are some small problems: 1) Some of the routes are clearly not optimal. In my home area, it sometimes takes me on routes that I would never choose because I know better. 2) It sometimes recommends U-turns when they are neither safe nor even desirable. 3) It sometimes tells you to turn (right, say) when it should be saying "keep" right, i.e. there is no actual turn at all. This could seriously mess you up in an unfamiliar area, which is when you really need to depend on the GPS. 4) It doesn't seem to have many business establishments (e.g. restaurants) in its database. In spite of these complaints, I am pleased with the item (hence the 4 stars) and would recommend it, especially since the price is still coming down. Garmin has discontinued it but hopefully will continue to support it with map and other updates.

I purchased this unit in January of 2008 for ~$300. It was then in the middle of Garmin's Nuvi line and offered most of the features I wanted. Generally it is a very good GPS unit, but there are several things that bother me. 1) Touch screen is flaky (e.g. touching 'A' clicks 'U') at times which slows down look-ups and destination entries. 2) Routing preferences seem to have little to no effect on the route solution. 3) POI searches don't find results when using categories, but do work by name search (after an eternity of waiting). And finally, 4) Garmin only gives a free map update if one is released within 30 days of registering your unit. They only update in April so DO NOT register yours until April if you want a free update. Map updates cost nearly as much as a new low end unit. This model has been discontinued so you should start seeing them being dumped at fire sale prices.

I've been VERY pleased with the nuvi 350 since I bought it! Garmin has been the choice for my family for many years and I'm again impressed by their product. The interface is very easy to learn and navigate, information is presented clearly and firmware updates are easy to obtain and install.
Satellite acquisition is extremely fast, even inside a vehicle. I'm also pleased that Garmin has retained the same plug-in style for their external antenna as in past models, since I've owned the Garmin external antenna from a previous device; it fits into a small hole in the side of the nuvi 350's flip-up antenna and adds even more accuracy.
The windshield mount is unobtrusive, fitting nicely into the high-left (roof at the A-post) corner in my car. I haven't tried the dashboard disc yet, but it felt too smooth to stay in place on my Honda Accord's sloped dash. It's easy to read and doesn't take too much focus off the road, and the screen's color scheme changes from day to night so as to not overpower/underpower the user in high or low ambient light.
The routing has been fairly accurate, though I have discovered some minor flaws. In one instance, I was directed from one rural state highway to another in favor of shortcuting on a corner on what turned out to be a dirt road over a closed bridge; the rerouting was around an intersection I knew to be very busy, but I had to return to the original route. Another error includes a stretch of highway near Allentown, Pa., which has been open not quite a year but isn't in the map yet.
Within the routing is an option to detour. This is different from auto-rerouting when you miss a turn in that you can detour ahead of something and the device will replot your route. I've been pleased by this, but it only detours around an immediate hazard (i.e. bypassing an accident, a known problem area, etc.). The detoured route puts you back onto the original route fairly quickly, which is tough when you're trying to avoid a long stretch of road, such as a highway with a long construction zone.
The speaker is very clear and easy to understand. I was very pleased with the street name software, which not only reads aloud that there is a turn ahead but onto what road (even local names are sufficiently accurate; I live in Upstate NY and Indian names are very close, if not right on). The UI also includes the ability to load mp3 files and Audible audiobooks for listening, and these are very clear for such as small speaker.
I would overall recommend this as high bang for the buck. It's very affordable (which is what eventually convinced me to purchase it), very feature-laden and very easy to use. Garmin is known to have stronger U.S. mapping than many competitors, such as TomTom, and with very few exceptions I've been thoroughly impressed. The screen may be smaller than some other comparable models, but it's never been a problem for me and the additional cost for the larger screen doesn't seem to be worth it.
