Amazon.com The first television series to depict the American soldier in combat during the Vietnam War, producer Zev Braun's Emmy-nominated Tour of Duty earned critical acclaim during its three-season run. Judging by the number of Internet sites devoted to the program, it also remains a fan favorite more than a decade after its 1989 cancellation; said fans should be pleased with this five-disc set, which compiles the entire 1987 debut season in a slightly altered format. What's untouched on this set is the drama and tension endured by the men of Company B, a racially and socially diverse platoon led by Sgt. Zeke Anderson (Terence Knox), as they serve their twelve-month tour in 1967. The 21 episodes of the first season (largely helmed by veteran TV writer-director Bill W.L. Norton) take the platoon from their formation at Firebase Ladybird ("Pilot") to the brutal battle to take Hill 1000 ("The Hill") that concludes the season on a downbeat note. What's missing, as longtime fans will immediately note, is the theme song (the Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black") and much of the vintage rock music that played throughout the series. They've been replaced by generic (if effective) library tracks, which may lessen the impact of certain favorite scenes for viewers familiar with the broadcast versions. Also, no other extras are available on the disc, which is a slight disappointment, but for fans, simply having the entire first season might be satisfying enough. --Paul Gaita

Great series, well written January 6, 2009 R. Larson (Des Plaines, IL United States) This series sure brings back memories. I remember watching this series when I could back in the eighties (Thursday nights?). Good stories! Some episodes are a reach, but still entertaining.
tour of duty January 6, 2009 R. Sprunger (Butler, IN United States) A very nice product and a very good experience. My son requested this item for Christmas, and I was very pleased with how swiftly it came. Item was shipped in very good condition. Thank you!!!
Love hate opinion of this DVD set December 29, 2008 Richard Manks (Wellington, NZ) I love the show Tour of Duty, I think it is much better than Band of Brothers (personal opinion). The show was well made, before computer effects so you might be surprised at all the real helicopters and explosions. The characters were good (though the actors took a few episodes to really find their characters). The stories were remarkably interesting and original given the setting. And though this must have been the most well-behaved platoon in the war, the topics of war crimes and the like is not completely glossed over. The bad - the box is nice but this set is overpriced. There are no special features at all. The music has been mentioned by others and having (almost) all of the original music removed does change the feel of the show - instead of 60s music from the time of the war the show has a lot of 80s style music that sounds like it was made on a synthesiser in someone's room. It gets really bad when there are references made by characters to music that isn't actually playing. Then again I remember the roiginal, so I can't say how a new viewer would be affected by the current soundtrack.
Tour of Duty Season 1 July 6, 2008 G. Black I loved this show when it was on TV and now I am thrilled to relive those episodes again. I hate when the show was pulled...I guess a little too realistic for some. Great acting and realistic scenarios. A+!
Tour of Duty November 27, 2007 Thomas G. Gurrola (Houston, Texas USA) Love it! Would be perfect with the orignal soundtrack!! Miss the Rolling Stones and Paint It Black!!! But if you enjoyed Tour of Duty on TV bought it anyway. I have all three seasons!
