Product Description A MAN LEARNS THAT HIS KINDLY OLD AUNTS AND HIS SINISTER BROTHER ARE ALL SERIAL KILLERS, AND TRIES TO SORT IT OUT FAST SO HE CAN GO ON HIS HONEYMOON.
Amazon.com essential video Frank Capra made this film in 1941 before he went off to make films for America's war effort, but it wasn't released until 1944. Adapted from the hit play by Joseph Kesselring, this frantic black comedy shows Capra at his best as a master of mood and timing. Actresses Josephine Hull and Jean Adair reprise their Broadway performances as two gentle old ladies who poison men with elderberry wine to put them out of their misery. Cary Grant plays one nephew, a normal guy who just gets wind of their little hobby and tries to get them to stop, while Raymond Massey plays another, a villain just escaped from jail. Capra encourages the cast, especially Grant, to give a somewhat more outsized performance than one might expect. But made during the war years as it was, this overstated comic approach to killing was probably cathartic. --Tom Keogh

Arsenic & Old Lace February 1, 2010 P. L. Kokawski (Durham NC) If you love Cary Grant and old movies then this is for you. Mr Grant at his comedic best! Very entertaining and fun to watch!
Worth watching, but a bit overrated. January 24, 2010 Groovy Vegan (USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Arsenic and Old Lace frequently shows up on lists of the best dark comedies of all time, although generally not in the top 10. And, as of this writing, it is listed as the 246th best movie of all time.
As a viewer watching this movie nearly 70 years after it was filmed, I can appreciate the clever screen play, the fine acting of Cary Grant (although exaggerated as though it's a silent movie) , the other actors (particularly the classic stage actresses, Josephine Hull and Jean Adair who played very convincing sweet elderly ladies with a bad habit of murder), and some of the physical gags and verbal jokes. Some of the other jokes required being familiar with the popular culture of the 1940s.
While I appreciated this movie, I increasingly found it slow and boring, with some of the same gags repeated over and over, and with the story dragged out and slow to resolve. I think the movie is still worth watching for cultural literacy and enjoyment, but I do find it a touch overrated. If you bore easily, you may want to skip this movie.
Perfect January 17, 2010 JP (Florida) I was so excited to find this movie! Price was great and it shipped quickly. Overall, a great buy.
A must see! January 2, 2010 Belinda Lathan (Wisconsin) Definitely one of my favorite movies! The writing in this film is unrivaled, completely and totally entertaining and captivating, This is Cary Grant at his very best and most comical. A must see.
Classic Halloween December 9, 2009 Ralph E. Walker (Baton Rouge, LA) I watch this every Halloween along with 1930's Universal horror flicks. I've been howling with laughter at it since childhood. If you can't laugh at this, you're already dead.
