Amazon.com Review Amazon Best of the Month, October 2009: An investigation into a cold-blooded murder introduces Detective Harry Bosch to a Chinese underworld lurking in the dark recesses of the City of Angels. Its tentacles are far reaching, yet it remains shrouded in secrecy due to time-honored cultural traditions that keep the exploited from speaking out. To the victim's family, Bosch promises revenge, but when his own daughter suddenly becomes a target, he promises blood. However, working a case with leads on both sides of the Pacific provides little room (or time) for error. 9 Dragons is a gritty, coffee-and-cigarettes crime thriller full of smart twists and generous helpings of suspense. Fans of Michael Connelly can expect another exceptional thrill ride, while newcomers will be immediately engaged by the tortured and unrelenting Bosch. "He knew one day it would come to this, that the darkness would find [his daughter] and that she would be used to get him," writes Connelly. "That day was now." --Dave Callanan
Product Description LAPD Detective Harry Bosch is off the chain in the fastest, fiercest, and highest-stakes case of his life.
Fortune Liquors is a small shop in a tough South L.A. neighborhood, a store Bosch has known for years. The murder of John Li, the store's owner, hits Bosch hard, and he promises Li's family that he'll find the killer.
The world Bosch steps into next is unknown territory. He brings in a detective from the Asian Gang Unit for help with translation--not just of languages but also of the cultural norms and expectations that guided Li's life. He uncovers a link to a Hong Kong triad, a lethal and far-reaching crime ring that follows many immigrants to their new lives in the U.S.
And instantly his world explodes. The one good thing in Bosch's life, the person he holds most dear, is taken from him and Bosch travels to Hong Kong in an all-or-nothing bid to regain what he's lost. In a place known as Nine Dragons, as the city's Hungry Ghosts festival burns around him, Bosch puts aside everything he knows and risks everything he has in a desperate bid to outmatch the triad's ferocity.

Bosch On A Mission March 19, 2010 Emm (CA) I have read a lot of Michael Connelly's books, many of those Harry Bosch novels. I always enjoy his storytelling. Same with this title. Enjoyed the cross cultural aspect of the book (parts of the book take place in a specific Asian locale). Recommended.
wild and vivid chase through Hong Kong March 18, 2010 Dragon Speak (USA) As a fan of the Harry Bosch novels, I found this "personal" tale up to Connolly's usually fine standards. Many many plot twists and turns, with realistically drawn characters and surprising and shocking sudden events. I could not put it down until I finished it !
Taken In March 15, 2010 Kevin Killian (San Francisco, CA United States) Many have called Connelly on the amazing similarity of his new novel to the Liam Neeson film "Taken." In my mystery club, one fellow explained that Connelly had written nearly all of Nine Dragons before he even heard of Taken. And when the movie became an unexpected success, what was he supposed to do with his novel, just junk it, or change Maddie to a teenage boy instead of a girl? Instead, he took the high road and just published the thing as it stood, and maybe this was a mistake, because anyone who's seen Taken would think of Nine Dragons as a Taken ripoff.
But it's really the other way around. I'm here to tell you that when I saw Taken, I said to myself that actress Famke Janssen was playing Neeson's estranged wife exactly like she would play Eleanor Wish, her combination of regret, anger, bitterness, and despair. And emasculation! Also, the device of having the cop's daughter led astray by a more worldly girlfriend--who had it first? Connelly or Taken?
Nine Dragons leaves an ugly taste in one's mouth because of Connelly's treatment of Asians. I'm not Asian myself, but if I were, and read this book, I'd be furious. Except for Sun Yee, there is no Asian character in the book worth a damn. Every other Chinese person is incompetent, ambitious, mired in corruption, obnoxious, or just plain evil. One gets the picture that Connelly believes life doesn't mean much to those Asians. His look on the back jacket is priceless in this regard. Thrust down in the middle of Hong Kong, his eyes have that glazed look of someone who fears he's going to be sold into white slavery any minute if he doesn't keep a constant 360' watch around him. Could it be the evident haste with which this book was written, that accounts for some of its flaws? Outside of that, it keeps you interested, pretty much, but just a little Sinophobic.
Harry goes International March 15, 2010 T. Anderson (PA USA) Harry Bosch is hungry for a new case...it's been a while. Much to Harry's joy (and his partner's despair), they are assigned to what appears to be a liquor store robbery in another precinct. Ironically, Harry has been to this store before. The victim (Mr. Li) had shown him an extraordinary kindness by offering Harry his last cigarette as he hid under the store's counter during a riot. As Harry delves into the case, he quickly finds himself involved with Chinese triads both in LA and Hong Kong. The plot of 9 Dragons is high action and I had trouble putting the book down. I'm a little surprised that the overall Amazon rating for 9 Dragons is 3 1/2 stars. I thought this was an exceptional Harry Bosch book.
