With So Many Diamond Shapes Available, Which One Is Right For Me?

By: Grace Jennings

Diamonds are typically cut into one of ten different shapes. Each shape has its own unique set of properties. Here you will find a short description of each to help you decide on the perfect diamond for you.

The most popular cut by far is the round cut. If you are stumped and looking to make a quick decision, the round cut may be just the thing for you. When thinking of diamonds, the round cut is the shape which first comes to mind.

If you're looking for something different, the princess cut is the second most popular diamond shape. Properly cut, a princess cut diamond can be beautiful. However, sometimes they don't quite come out as brilliant as you may expect. If you want one, get one from a well-established jeweler.

The oval cut is another very popular cut, especially for engagement rings. This is a classic style, almost as common as is the round cut. This cut is beautiful and stylish as well as versatile - this diamond shape can work in rings of almost any style.

One of the very most elegant cuts is the marquise cut. This is an elongated shaped cut which makes the diamond appear larger than its actual size and as such is typically used on smaller diamonds. The name of this cut comes from the fact that they were and still are popular with royalty.

The pear shaped cut is similar to both the oval and the marquise cuts, featuring the best that each of these cuts have to offer - truly a winning combination.

The step cut, which is more commonly known as the emerald cut, is a good choice if you're looking for a starter diamond. While it is pretty, it doesn't have as many facets as some of the other cuts. So, it's easy to see imperfections in the gem.

The asscher cut is more of an art deco style. It's usually used for other gems. Although it is a less common cut for diamonds, it is slowly becoming more popular. If you're looking for a fairly unique diamond cut, it may be right for you.

For beauty and a truly rare cut of diamond, there's nothing quite like a perfectly cut, flawless heart shaped diamond. Since this is a very difficult cut to do well, these can be very expensive and hard to find. However, once you finally get your hands on one - or one on your hand, you will feel that the gem was well worth the time and expense.

A traditional cut which has fallen out of favor somewhat in recent times is the radiant cut. This is similar to an emerald cut, but with more facets for added luster.

Last, but not least, there's the cushion cut. That cut is designed to make a diamond seem larger than it is. It can really show off a diamond's best features and enhance it's look, even if it's small.
