Symptoms, Causes And Treatment Of Gynecomastia

By: Caleb Lee

Gynecomastia is a medical condition found in men in which the mammary glands of a man develop unusually. The unusual development of mammary glands results in the development of breasts that may even secrete milk. This can happen to a man of almost any age.

The cause behind this condition is yet to be fully determined but most doctors believe that this condition occurs because of hormonal imbalance. A more specific cause is an imbalance of testosterone and estrogen. This hormonal imbalance causes gynecomastia.

This imbalance cause excess deposition of fat in certain parts of the body including the chest area. The deposition of fat in the chest area results in the development of breast in a man. This condition is usually found in men who are obese.

This imbalance in testosterone and estrogen hormones is the main cause of gynecomastia or man boobs. However, there are many other causes that result in man boobs. Often, this condition is caused by the different types of medication that any person may be going through to cure different ailments.

According to survey results more than 10 to 20% of this disease occurs due to medication. Some of the medicines that may cause this disease are antipsychotics, imatinib mesylate, omeprazole, cimetidine, finasteride and others. Again medications that are used to treat prostate cancer like GnRH analogs and antiandrogens can also cause this problem.

This condition may result because of some other ailments as well. Certain parts of our brains like pituitary and hypothalamus control the balance of different hormones in our body. When these parts of the brain do not work well because of a disease affecting them, there is hormonal imbalance in the body. The level of testosterone may decrease that can cause this condition. There are a variety of cures available for this condition but a man must first find a cure that suits him.

Once the cause of the disease has been established, the doctor will determine which treatment would be most effective for the patient. Treatment can vary from one patient to another. The treatment may be in the form of hormone treatments, surgery and dietary changes.

A man can ask his physician about the different cures of gynecomastia and take his expert opinion before opting for one. Ultimate gynemax, tamoxifen, gynexin alpha formula and clomiphene are common prescriptions for this purpose. There are many other products of similar type available in the market that can help cure gynecomastia.

If nothing works a person can opt for surgery. Surgery is usually seen as the last option for curing this condition when nothing else works. There are a variety of surgery techniques like liposuction, mammoplasty or gland excision available that can eliminate this condition. One should always consult a specialist in this field before opting for surgery.
