Singing And Microphones-what Is The Best Match

By: Josh Newsbomsdy

Microphones are used in many different ways. The most widespread way of using a microphone is to amplify ones voice. The microphone was invented as audiences grew larger and large over the years and there was a need to have the sound of ones voice travel further. Today, microphones are used everywhere, and wherever there is a need for someone’s voice, or a sound to be amplified. A common use of microphones is to amplify ones singing.

There are many ways to amplify voice. In general, singing does not require much muscle strength but it does require a high degree of muscle coordination. Singing can be done by one person or by a group, such as a choir. In group cases, more microphones should be used. Although, there is a whole science and art behind singing, in general, nearly anyone who can speak can sing, since in many respects singing is merely a form of sustained speech. For many people out there, singing is to speaking as running is to walking. Music is in every corner of our universe. Music brings a sense of connection to things larger than oneself, and a singing tradition really connects a person with that. Music lends its power to all the other practices that shape who we are and so does singing. Singers must condition their voice and the related muscles if they wish to sing well. Just like a runner must train their bodies to run repeatedly around the track before the big race; singers must condition and train their instruments to perform consistently as well. One type of exercise that singers use is a form of circular breathing which allows them to sustain multiple notes for long periods of time. Chances are that when you hear someone sing, it is either being done live or it is a recording. If the person singing is not right there nearby, chances are that he/she, the singer is using a microphone. Microphones are used to amplify or to record voice. Microphones do so by, transforming sound waves to electric current. Then the electric signal either is amplified or recorded. Therefore, because these are two different things, there are two types of microphones for both purposes. When a vocal sound wave is to be recorded a condenser microphone will be used. If the sound wave is to be amplified, then dynamic microphones are better for that. Dynamic microphones are a popular choice for live sound applications, but are also used in the studio or in performances. This type of mic is used for both instruments that have high attack volumes, such as snare drums or signing at a rock concert for example. The reason for this is that dynamic microphones can handle higher levels than condenser mics is that dynamic microphones are essentially noise free, but the electronic circuit built into condenser types is a potential source of trouble, and must be carefully designed and constructed of premium parts. Dynamic microphones don’t need a power source and are very versatile. Most live setups use dynamic microphones to record the voice of the singer. This type of microphone is more durable, cheaper and usually larger than condenser microphones. When you are listening to your favourite radio show announcer then chances are, they are using a condenser microphone.

Microphones are have an integral role in the voice recording or amplifying process. They are the instruments that transform the sound wave to electric current. To get the most out of a performance, or to get the best possible sound on a voice recording, or a person singing, there is a need to use the correct type of microphone.
