Playing Texas Holdem Seriously

By: Holdem Doubler

Texas Hold'em has gained popularity throughout the beginning of the 21st century. The first tournaments were held in Las Vegas but the game got its start in Robstown, Texas. A group of Texan men brought the game up to Las Vegas during the 1960's.

It took a while for the game to catch on with the richer gamblers who frequented the Las Vegas strip. Once it did get into the more glamorous casinos, the game took off. There has been numerous books written about it and many televised shows.

The most famous televised show is the World Series of Poker. This show began in 2003 during which a man who had won an online contest, Chris Moneymaker, won the entire game. This act created a desire in many to be the next person to win millions from Texas Hold'em.

Of the seven cards in this version of a community type of poker, two are face down for only the players to see and the last five are set into the window. Before the players receive their cards two of them place blind bets, after which the rest of the players ante based on what two cards they were dealt. After all the players have decided if they are going to stay in the game, the dealer then puts out three face up cards called the flop.

The window is the place, usually in the middle of the table for all players to see, where the dealer will place all the community cards. Community cards are five of the seven that the players will use to try to make a winning hand. Each player is dealt two face down cards that are their own.

After establishing who will play each round, after the initial three of the window are laid out, the real betting begins. Each player will look at their hole cards, the two they were given in the beginning, and the three in the window to decide if they have a chance to make a good enough hand to win the round. Once they have decided if they will stay in, they bet.

The other players have the ability to either see the bet, raise the bet, or fold after the first player bets. A player bets the same amount as the original bettor when they are "seeing" the bet. The players add an amount more to the bet when they are raising the bet.

There are four chances for a player in Texas Hold'em to bet. Once before the flop, once after the flop, and one time each as the last two cards are dealt. Therefore, with these four bets and the raising of bets, the pots in this game can get large.

The game of Texas Hold'em has three different forms. The three forms are Limit Hold'em, No-Limit Hold'em, and Pot-Limit Hold'em. The limit version the bets are set amounts which are called big bet and small bet.

In No-Limit, a small blind starts the betting with the player to the left of the dealer and the next player bets the big blind. The big blind is usually twice the size of the small blind. The players who want to stay in will bet equal amounts to the big blind once all the players have received their hole cards.

The game ends when the river card, the last of the window cards, has been revealed and the final bet has been made. Depending upon whether more than one player has stayed in, or not folded, there will be a showdown. The player who has the best hand will win the game of Texas Hold'em.
