Planning Your Dream Montana Elk Hunt

By: Mark Richards

Hunting is something that has been going on ever since the ancient times. This used to be done as a form of survival, for food. Today, hunting has evolved into a hobby, a form of leisure for those who seek excitement. Fowl is a common prey when it comes to hunting. If you seek bigger game then, elk is definitely for you.

Big game hunting includes elks, which are some of the biggest species of deer that we have. Montana is known for hunting and elk is one of the main attractions. Before you set out on your hunting trip, make sure that you know everything there is to make it your dream vacation.

If you're planning an elk hunt in Montana, nothing would make it better than to be able to have a great catch. Make sure that you know the area that you are going to be hunting in by pre-scouting the area. If you find that you do not have time to do this, check with the department in charge (such as Game and Fish) and they will be more than happy to help.

Know what type of food and habitats elks look for at the time that you are going. If you can find their source of food and know where they will be staying then they can't be far away. It's also always a good idea to have someone with good knowledge on this with you, such as guide or hunting outfitter.

Over and above anything, don't forget to purchase a hunting license. Without the proper license you won't be able to hunt for anything. You can purchase a Montana hunting license online before going on your trip if you want to get ahead.

Make sure that you know the rules and regulations for hunting in the area that you will be in. Montana has their own set of guidelines that you may find online. You can also check with the Montana Fish Wildlife and Park office to learn more about this. Having good knowledge on this can make your trip better.

Make sure that you pack everything you will need. Things you won't want to forget are a camera, binoculars, sunscreen, insect repellant and appropriate clothing for hunting. Don't forget to throw in your sleeping bag as well if you're doing a wilderness hunt.

Regardless of whether or not you'll be spending a few nights in the wilderness you will still want to check into a lodge where you can relax after. If you're going during peak season, then it would be advisable to make reservations early.
