Is Laser Assisted Liposuction Right For You?

By: Lorrie Mayhue

There are many different types of liposuction, such as laser assisted liposuction and ultrasound assisted liposuction. First however it is important to understand the purpose of the procedure in general. Liposuction is a surgery designed to get rid of pouches and bulges of stubborn fat. Basically, it is sucked out of your body.

It was originally developed in Europe. Its purpose is to decrease the amount of pain, swelling, and bruising which generally result from more traditional liposuction surgery techniques. In this type of liposuction, a laser is used to focus energy waves onto the areas of excess fat which are to be removed. As they penetrate the skin, the waves beginning weakening the membranes in which the fat cells are held. They liquefy the fat cells, making them easier to remove.

At this point, the more or less standard procedure is used. A tool, the cannula, is attached to the withdrawal device being used - generally a pump device or a syringe. The cannula is inserted into tiny incisions made by the surgeon. With laser assisted surgery, the incisions are much smaller than in standard liposuction. The liquefied cells are then sucked out of your body.

Usually, women like to have laser liposuction done on their knees, thighs, abdomens, and hips, while men generally have it done on their abdomens, chests, arms, love handles, and necks. The technique is also often used to reduce the production of sweat in the glands under the arms.

The difference between laser assisted liposuction and traditional techniques are what makes the former so beneficial. In addition to precision, the laser allows for a much quicker recovery period. Because there is far less swelling and bruising, not to mention less pain, patients do not have to spend a substantial amount of time recuperating.

It is also beneficial because you usually do not have to take pain medication after the procedure - the laser itself takes care of pain management.
