Is Buying A Debit Card A Good Investment?

By: Sherman Bell

When using a debit card, it is important to know that they are directly joined to your checking account. Many people use these cards as if they were a credit card, especially if they are considered a Visa or a MasterCard, meaning the logo of either one of these companies is present on the card. Debit cards do not charge any sort of fees because the amount of money in the account is the amount of money available on the card. With these facts, is a debit card a good thing to have?

A debit card is given to someone who opens a checking account at a bank and asks for a debit card. These cards are used like a credit card but do not come with the hassles of fees and penalties. Debit cards never have to be paid off and users never have to worry about late payments. These cards make it so much easier to purchase things in the store as well as online. Debit cards are quick and easy to use. With the swipe of a card a payment is made and that is that. Lose the paper and go plastic!

With a debit card, some people are able to learn how to manage money. The cards are attached to accounts with acts like a safety net to keep you from going over the amount that you have available in your account. Cash and checks both are quickly coming a thing of the past as debit cards are used more and more.

Since we now know how a debit card works, you do need that know that they do have pitfalls, especially for people who like to spend and spend and for people who are not the most responsible. Debit cards should always be handled with care and if you are someone that can do that, then a debit card is great for you.

Because the card works with the checking account, transactions are recorded and processed through the use of a computer program. The debit card's unsuspecting enemy is the ATM machine. Though these machines to so seem like Heaven on Earth, they are not, despite the fact that within two minutes, you have money shooting out into your hand.

Just as easily and quickly as money was put into your account, money can disappear even faster, so everyone with a debit card needs to be careful. The receipts that the ATM prints out are not always true because they do not always show the correct balance in the account. If a certain transaction has not cleared, then the ATM will not have deduction of money on the receipt. People can overdraw on their account without bouncing a check.

Debit cards can also be blocked just like a credit card. Banks and many stores can block a set amount in the account until a certain transaction has processed. For example, if you pay $30 for gas using your debit card, and the store blocks $60 on the card and you bought something worth $30, you will run into many issues until the block is removed from your debit card.

In all, debit cards are nice to have if you are a responsible and careful person. Using them wisely is very important, and if you don't you will run into trouble.
