I Love Murcia

Murcia, Spain (one of my favourite places anywhere!) is a place of many faces and has a rich mix of old architecture, trendy shops and enough variety of places to stay, places to eat and bars/nightlife to suit just about anyone! Booking a hotel is perhaps easier than in many major places and fantastic value can be had. Whatever your frame of mind (the odd night I just fancy a quiet meal, other times I'm ready to enjoy a concert followed by some late night clubbing) Murcia can oblige your fancy..

The Casino (constructed in 1847), in Trapería, has a spectacular Arab patio, an ornate ballroom and a great selection of other fantastically decorated halls and rooms with fantastic ornate plaster. Really it's more of a luxury Gentlemen's Retreat than what you'd think of as a casino these days but go there if you can, it's absolutely Amazing!

The Cathedral is the main attraction of the City in truth. It was built from the 14th to the 18th centuries and really epitomises the mixture of building of those centuries. There are four special features of the cathedral of special interest to the visitor: The detailed face of the “Puerta del Perdón”; The Renaissance “Junterones” chapel; The cathedral tower which is 96 metres high and includes 25 bells: Also you mustn't forget the Diocesan Museum.

Other architecturally interesting points of interest you daren't miss are the City Hall (Ayuntamiento) and the Teatro Romea, their ornamental fronts represent the 14th century. Makes sure you visit the area's brilliant artistic roots in plenty of exhibition halls, art galleries and museums that make up a vital part of the towns varied intellectural life: Salzillo Museum (what a brilliant sculptor this guy was!); The Ramón Gaya Museum (dedicated to this local artist in 1990, he was 82 then; The Archaeological Museum; The Museum of Fine Arts; The Bullfighting Museum (some exhibits for the strong stomach...).. There are many more pieces from other local talents also. One of Ramón's main influences was Rembrandt - to show you a glimpse of the style..; The Palacio Almudí Art Centre; etc etc.... If culture and architecture are for you then you'll have a wonderful time in Murcia County.

One fascinating feature here to show us Murcia's commercial history is some of the streets are named after the stock that were once sold along them, for example Plateria (silver), Traperia (cloth).

Establishments in Murcia cover a range of standards to accomodate all pockets from 5 star opulence to a little bed and breakfast and cafes and restaurants litter the many little squares to please all wallets and tastes. If you just want a good night out there are plenty of nice and some not so cool bars to quaff your thirst in.

Shopping is a particular joy for my partner more than myself. (I'm not alone here I bet..) She who must be obeyed tells me that she doesn't have to go anywhere else to buy clothes so that tells me the shopping in Murcia must be pretty impressive!! No, seriously, there are lots of nice shops and anything you could need is available here. There are some really cool trendy shops and the staff are very friendly although in some it makes it a bit easier if you had a tiny bit of Spanish.. Overall, Murcia is a really nice place to visit or live near which is what I do..
