How To Design Baskets For The Premium High-end Gift Market

By: James Guitard

The majority of gift baskets shipped are low-end gifts that cater to the masses of people sending inexpensive thank you and general appreciation gifts. This price range would not break anyone's budget but would allow them an opportunity to show a friend, colleague or business associates some kind of message of good will. Sending baby gift baskets, thank you gifts, get well baskets and birthday gifts would fall under this category. The industry needs more high-end basket suppliers. Designers with skill and ability to create gifts for the upscale market. Gifts that will be sent to CEO's and executives.

When there is simply too much product to present in a gift basket, the container selection is the key. Often times, a large wicker design is filled right to the bottom of the basket, with minimal shred or craft paper as a base. This adds considerably to the weigh of the design and a strong solid handle is absolutely necessary. Imagine the recipient carrying the gift immediately after opening and having all product drop to floor due to a weak handle breaking from the weight. If possible, a large hamper without handles is a great option. The recipient will naturally pick up the container from the bottom or from the handles built into the side of the hamper. The hamper can also hold more products due to the fact that it is neatly stacked inside and not 'on display' like in a traditional gift basket. When photographing the gift, the product is presented nicely but the gift is shipped closed with the lid on top and a pretty bow to complete the look.

The most popular color scheme for a high-end gift basket is arguably black and gold. The color gold is a symbol of richness. The color black complements gold nicely. It's difficult to go wrong when using black and gold but it's important that the use of these two colors is not over done. Gold should be the primary color choice with black as a complementary color to simply accent the design. Black simply provides layers with which to present the gold colored products. If there is insufficient gold-colored product available, substitute with browns and yellows if possible. With a premium gift basket, it may be necessary to use brown or yellow product as filler product that isn't seen as much as the gold products on display.

With respect to creating a special wow factor with your gift design, the choice of premium food products may be the key to success. While your competitors are adding salmon pate to its high-end designs, imported caviar could be your choice. While your competitors are adding boxed chocolate that sells itself as a quality product, find a local chocolatier and have a special selection made just for your company. This may provide an additional branding option that was not thought of otherwise. It's important to remember that with an unlimited budget (or simply a high ceiling) careful thought must go into what is added to the gift basket.

Besides the visual presentation of the gift, the message provided is what may be the lasting impression. Traditionally, a gift basket has a gift card tied to the back of the basket. The card is made of paper with either handwritten or computer printed messages. One interesting option is to include a computer cd in the shape of a cd. An author could have their book in pdf format on the cd. A web designer could have samples of their websites for display on the cd. Regardless, it's important to think outside the box to ensure that whatever gift card style you choose, the right message is conveyed.

It's hard to imagine a high-end gift basket being sent for personal reasons. Most people don't need a huge assortment of food items unless the gift is being sent as a family gift. Regardless of the many possible reasons for sending gifts, it's most important to ensure that the gift received is the gift sent with the implied intentions. A gift should provide good thoughts and good feelings towards the sender. Whether as a thank you gift or sympathy gift, make the gift personal.
