How Does The Pulfrich Three Dimensional Effect Work?

By: Joe Healy

This psycho-optical phenomenon is the Pulfrich effect, it is lateral motion of something in the field of view being interpreted as being closer or farther away because of the different speeds the two eyes see. The effect is generally created by covering one eye with a really dark filter. Carl Pulfrich, a German physicist, first described this phenomenon in 1922 and it is named after him. One
The subject in the classic Pulfrich effect experiment watches a pendulum as it swings in a plane perpendicular to the subjects line of vision . With a neutral density filter used A lens which has been darkened, perhaps with grey is placed in front of, say, the right eye the pendulum seems to take on an elliptical orbit, appearing closer as it swings toward the right and farther as it swings toward the left.
The widely accepted explanation of the apparent depth is that a reduction in retinal illumination (relative to the fellow eye) renders a matching delay in signal transmission, sending forth immediate spatial disparity in moving articles. This seems to occur because visual system latencies are generally shorter for (the visual system responds more quickly to) Brilliant targets as opposed to muted ones. Depth with this motion. (first described by the German physicist Carl Pulfrich) is the visual system’s solution to a moving target when a difference in retinal illuminance, and hence a difference in signal latencies, exists between the two eyes.
Scientifically, the Pulfrich Effect was typically measured under the conditions of a full field consisting of dark targets on a bright background, yielding nearly 15ms. When was The Delay for a factor of ten differences in average retinal luminance, and the percentage of it.[2][3]four[5] The delay was found to increase monotonically with a wide decrease in luminance. (> 6 log-units) range of luminance.Number two enclosed on bracketsThree The same luminance-to-latency relationship is shown when the effect is used with bright targets on a very dark background.
Several eye diseases including cataracts can experience this type of effect.[6] optic neuritis,(Seven)Eight: or the condition multiple sclerosis.Nine In this type of case there have been reports of symptoms such as difficulty in accurately judging what path oncoming vehicles are following.
In visual media such as film and television, the Pulfrich effect is often used to produce 3-Dimensional imagery. As in other kinds of stereoscopy, glasses are used to create the illusion of a three-dimensional image. Through the use of a neutral filter (by way of example, the darkened sunglass lens)
over one eye, a picture, moving from right to left as well as left to right, excluding up and down will appear to move in depth, either toward or away from the viewer.
Because the Pulfrich effect depends on motion in a particular direction to instigate the illusion of depth, it is not useful as a general stereoscopic technique; for example it cannot be used to show a stationary object apparently extending into or out of the screen; similarly, objects moving vertically will not be seen as moving in depth. This can be used in select visual scenarios as an interesting novelty effect. One benefit of material created to utilize the Pulfrich effect is it is totally harmonious with "regular" viewing eliminating the need of "special" glasses.
This effect was somewhat popular in the 1990's. For example, it was used in a "3D" motion television commercial in the 1990s, where objects moving in one direction appeared to be nearer to the viewer viewing the front of a tv screen and when they moved in the other direction, appeared to be farther from the viewer behind the screen of a television set. In order to see the effect, the marketer included numerous viewers with filters in a paper frame. There was a dark gray eye filter whereas the other one was more see-through. This time the commercial used only objects (refrigerators and skateboarders as an exmaple) A directional dependency was determined by which eye was covered by the darker filter. This was done by moving down a steep hill from one side of the screen to the other.
The effect was also used in the 1993 Doctor Who charity special Dimensions in Time and a 1997 special TV episode of 3rd Rock from the Sun. In Europe, there was a series of short 3D films shown on televison that were produced in the Netherlands. Eyeglasses were available for purchase at service station franchises. These short films were mainly travelogues of Dutch localities. An episode of The Power Rangers. The First sold through McDonalds used "Circlescan 4D" technology[Two] It is the Pulfrich effect on which it is based. Animated programs that employed the Pulfrich effect in specific segments of its programs include The Bots Master and Space Strikers; they typically achieved the effect through the use of constantly-moving background and foreground layers. This effect was used by the Nintendo Entertainment System in the game Orb-3D. (by having the player's ship always moving) and included a pair of glasses. So what was Mr. Jim Power did: That the lost Dimension now on 3-D for the Super Nintendo, using constantly scrolling on backgrounds to cause the incoming effect.
In United States and Canada, was discovered that six million 3D Pulfrich glasses were distributed to viewers for one of the hottest episode of Discovery Channel's Shark Week start on 2000.
