Garden Maintenance - An Introduction

By: Ron Hartfield

Whilst summer time is a time of outside fun, it's also a time for outdoor jobs. Seems like there's a long list of things that need to be done in your yard. And, many are tasks that have to be done again, over and over throughout the summer months.

Your lawn and landscaping requires more time than any other outside task. It's the first impression that people have of your home and you want it to look nice. Applying fertilizer to your lawn will make it grow thicker and have a much nicer green color. Regular cutting and trimming will help too.

If you have a number of flower beds, then you probably spend a good amount of time weeding them. One way to cut down on the weeding is to place wood chips around the flowers. Plastic sheets can also be used to keep weeds from appearing around your plants and will help hold the water in the soil and reduce watering time.

The wood on your deck often takes a beating throughout the winter. The action of snow melt, freezing and thawing can quickly attack the woods exterior. Completely cleaning the wood and resealing will keep it from rotting and needing replacing. A little effort now can save you from increased work at a future point.

All of the lighting fixtures in your yard should be cleaned at least once annuallyper year. Even if you have low maintenance solar lights, you should still remove all of the covers and clean them with soap and water. Glass globes or plastic covers that are dirty will result in your landscape lighting to be dimmed.

The outside of your house should be checked each summer and any cracks or loose pieces of siding or bricks should be attended to. Rain leaking behind any loose bits of siding or cracked bricks will cause the wood foundation to quickly rot. Mildew or marks can be removed with preprietary products, or often just with soap and water.

If you have a swimming pool, you know that even though they offer of fun, they can be lots of work as well. The pool water needs to be checked at least once each 7 days and chemicals added if needed. And, you need to clean the sides of the pool and check your filter at least once every 30 days.

Whilst it may be alright to let your external summer jobs get behind occassionally, don't let them lapse for too long. Things that are neglected take much longer to finish when you do get around to it. And, the summer months are for making the most of the outdoors with your family, not toiling all the time.

Before winterizing your pool, now would be a good time to consider the quality of the surrounding area too. Consider the condition of your outdoor rugs, e.g., and replace dud bulbs in your outdoor lighting.
