Airfare can be a major expense but with the flood of budget airlines, there are cheap flights to be found. Generally the best fares are booked at least three weeks in advance. Consider flying to off season destinations and traveling during the week (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) when planes are not as full and most airlines offer cheap flights. Also consider using accumulated frequent flyer miles but make sure you book well in advance; there is a very limited amount of seats designated for frequent flyer redemption.

Look for deals on transportation. If you’re renting a car, many agencies offer deep discounts if you’re renting for a week or more. Insurance can be the largest expense so check before you leave if your insurance company or credit card covers car rentals. Think about doing without a rental if you’re visiting large cities that have ample public transportation; it will not only save you money but also traffic headaches. If you belong to an auto club you may be eligible for travel discounts so keep that in mind.

Hotel accommodation is another expense that is unavoidable but deals can be found. Many find deep discounts through bidding sites on line, such as Priceline.com; do your research and make sure you are getting a deal before you bid. Also consider alternatives to hotels and resorts such as camping or home exchange. Youth hostels sound like something primitive and only for youngsters but many allow families and have very nice facilities.
