Buying The Right Children's Books For Your Little Ones

By: Gordon Remdon

Reading is seeing a return with more and more parents wanting their children to read. This has resulted in an increase in the sale of children's literature month by month. Parents want to catch their children young and get them hooked on to the written word. Making them aware of the world around them giving them a jump start on to education and learning.

Children's books come in all shapes and sizes. You can always find something that would interest your child. Usually young kinds are more attracted towards the illustrations in the books rather than the story, bright and easy to understand books are a good way to start.

For babies and toddlers you'll want to choose books based on the pictures. Children that are aged three to six will look for other features in the books that interest them. They not only want to look at the pictures, they also want to be entertained. They also want to associate the words that you're speaking with the pictures in front of them. They'll want to follow along with you as you read the book out loud to them. When left on their own to play, children of this age will read back, from memory, what you have previously read to them.

When buying books for children in that four to six age bracket you'll want to buy books that combine bright, interesting pictures with a story line that keeps your children interested. Popular books for young children include books with stories about families and day-to- day events. This is because your children will enjoy associating what they read with their own lives.

School children have more requirements from their books. They need books which besides being interesting provide them with opportunity to learn and improve their reading ability. At the same time these books must be easy for them to follow and on popular topics such as adventures, mysteries, and fantasy.

Older children that are reading well on their own will want to read books that are longer and have a subject matter that keeps them entertained for long periods of time. The Harry Potter books are of course some of the most requested books in the children's literature market today.

Older children on the other hand like to read books which are well written according to their level. Often they like mystery themes in which the protagonist solves a mystery. This kind of books, help them develop confidence and self growth.

Buying books for your children is never an exact science since each child is different and has individual and unique tastes. You'll have to experiment to find out what appeals to them the most before you find the right books for them. Even then you'll find that they love some books while others are put aside without a second thought.

Whenever you make a trip to a children's bookstore, take your child with you. This way they can learn to pick their own literature. You may need to help them learn appropriate subject matter for their ages and reading abilities.
