Amber Beer Drinking Tips And Background Of This Special Beer

By: Patrick Anthony

Amber ale is a term more commonly used in North America and France for a beer that we in the UK call Pale Ale. The actual color of this type of ale varies greatly from a light copper one to a light brown one. Although in Britain and Ireland by adding certain crystals or colored malt to the mixture the color becomes slightly darker.

This kind of beer is produced around the globe and each country where it is produced gives it a particular name. In France the French refer to this as Biere de Garde, whilst the Germans in Germany call it Altbier. But although the name differ they all use the same ingredients namely pale malts and ale yeast in its manufacture. Below we take a look at some of the various amber ales available around the world today.

1. Altbier - This one is produced in the Dusseldorf and Rhineland regions of Germany and may be referred to as just "Alt". The taste of this beer over others produced in Germany is much crisper and cleaner and the popular varieties drunk today are Diebels and Uerige.

2. Biere de Garde - Produced in the Pas de Calais region of France this would have been originally brewed in the areas farmhouses throughout the winter and spring months, simply because the weather in the summer could affect the way in which the yeast reacted. The name originates from the way in which this beer was kept after it had been bottled so that it could mature.

These beers would have originally been placed into their bottles and then sealed with a cork before being placed in a cellar to mature throughout the rest of the year. The way they were matured was similar to the way a Saison would have been. The most well known brands of this type of ale are Brasserie de Saint Sylvestre, Trois Monts and Brasseurs Duyck, Jenlain.

3. Saison - This ale comes from the French speaking Wallonia region of Belgium and are considered to be a farmhouse ale like the Biere de Garde. This is because they were originally brewed in farmhouses for the workers on the farm to drink as part of their work entitlement they were allowed half a dozen pints of ale during the day when the harvest was taking place.

4. English Bitter - This is another name that is often used by the customers who drink amber ale and it is believed the term was coined as a way that those drinking it could differentiate it from other types of hopped beers, such as porter or mild. However, the alcohol content of this type of amber ale is far less than you find in the ones we have mentioned above.

5. American Amber Ales - Have a much bitter taste compared to their European counterparts, but how bitter it is will depend upon the varieties of hops used in its making. This can actually dramatically affect not just the flavor but the aroma of this amber ale quite strongly. The Association of Brewers in the USA classify an amber beer as one that ranges in golden in color through to copper.
