Achebe’s Okonkwo Vs Tolstoy’s Ivan Ilych

By: Andrew Schwartz

The characters of Lev Tolstoy’s and Chinua Achebe’s protagonists are completle different on the first site. Okonkwo was the leader of the clan and was very much respected by the elders. If he made his mind up to act, most probable the greater part of his tribe would go after. Okonkwo understood that and at the moment his natives were to fight against the invaders, he decided that he would go ahead of them to battle. He showed an example - a messenger murder, but everything was in vain. Hoping that his tribe would stand up and oppose the invaders was a too large hope. The tribe already had buried hope and would not battle even when the respected leader were to lead the clan. For Okonkwo it was extremely difficult to realize it because he fully trusted the people he was brought up around and with whom lived together practically all his life. Upon understanding the circumstances he was in, it was too late to amend something. He was so much saddened by the betrayal of his tribe that Okonkwo saw the only way out of how to draw attention of the people who let him down - he hang himself.
On the other hand there is Ivan Ilych who also was a loyal citizen. The country controlled his every deed in his life. He dreamed of becoming a perfect citizen and thus he never made at least one of his decisions. Obeying what the society deemed as the standard, he did no realize that what the public usually acknowledged is not always the most excellent option. Individualism is considerably more significant than traditionalism even if the cost to pay is the loss of high opinion from a number of people. Ivan didn't understand he was going under deeper and deeper into the depths of evil. Though he didn't see it during his life, when Ivan Ilych looked round he realized that his life was shallow. But the time has passed to do something and he understood this all the same.
