A Simple Guide To Buying Your First Sewing Machine

By: Caroline P Sanders

Planning to get a sewing machine but didn't know what to look out for, given the many different brands, styles, models and prices available nowadays? It's understandable. After all, the sewing machine is one of the most expensive item you'll probably get for your sewing room and hence it's natural to feel a little anxious and lost with all the information available.

To help you with this, here are some rules of thumb to consider when choosing an appropriate sewing machine:

(1) Plan The Usage of The Sewing Machine

Ask yourself, what do you intend to use the sewing machine for? Is it for stitching new shirts for your hubby, creating comforters for the kid or embroidering intricate patterns on your new hankies? Regardless of the reasons, always remember this. Sewing machines are created for various functions and buying one that meet your wants is the fundament of a good buying decision. Do not get something just because your relative has one or you'll land up with a white elephant!

Next, take a look at the usable space available in your sewing room or the section of your house where you'll be the sewing machine. Is it large or modest? Are there electric ports available? Knowing this will help you decide if you want a sewing machine that's electric, mechanical, computerized, small and neat or simply serge.

(2) Take A Look At What's Available In the Market

Assuming you've a sketchy idea of what you probably want, inquire on the brands or models of sewing machines which specializes in that. For example, if embroidery's your thing, googling for that will point you to brands such as Viking etc. Check out the models they provide, their functions and of course, the costs involved.

Take a look at some of the customer's feedback to see if there's anything specially good or disgusting about a certain model.

(3) Decide On Your Budget

When you reach this step, you should have a general idea of how much those machines that fulfill your wants, costs. Decide how much you can and are able to fork out. The range can vary from under a hundred dollars for a no frills, simple model to more than seven thousand for an equipment that does almost anything other than cutting out your textile. Stay firm and don't just buy something because you think you "would" need them. Get something you know you'll definitely use once you hand over your credit card!

(4) Test Out the Machine(s)

Write out the few sewing machines you may want to buy and pop by for a trial at your nearest neighbourhood reseller. Or the place of someone whom you know possesses the machine. Test out the stitches and functions that you'll be using with samples of textile you usually work on.

Also remember to sound out your friend or the reseller about its durability, proof of guarantee, ease of replacing parts, cost of servicing, enhancement upgrades etc. If you're checking with a dealer, try confirming if they provide free sewing classes as a incentive.

(5) Buy It!

Once you've decide which machine to get, making the purchase is the easiest part. You can get it from your local reseller or online via reputed distributors. Some online distributors offer superb price cuts or bargains because of their lower adminstrative expenses. Nonetheless, do make sure such cost savings are not eroded by an unfair return policy or expensive shipping charges. Know your rights and obligations so that you'll have a much satisfying online buying experience!
