A Painting And Its Analysis

By: Andrew Schwartz

The picture I have decided to conduct an analysis on is 'Thirteen Americans' created by Alfred Leslie.
The picture is bigger than one that I have before studied. Its impressive size is significant as it positively contributes to the result of the painting. The result is awe-inspiring and threatening as at the picture are illustrated life-size people gaze directly at the watcher. The scale of this picture and its unique components is certainly extremely effective.
The picture looks as if it was oil on painting. The method used is linear, it’s also not typical of painting as is evocative from the element that every figure is carefully described and detail contributes the painting a lot. The brushstrokes are used to illustrate and not to imply. The painter has not worked using more than a few covers of paint as in the Impasto system. It looks as if the painter is striving to make the picture seem to be as realistic as he can.
In this picture, primary and secondary hues are equally used even though there is a domination of secondary ones as becomes clear from the considerable use of mauve and red. The hues are not soaked; they are quiet by means of other hues. The painter does not abuse of pure hues. Shifting from pastel to dim colors play a central role in this picture. The woman's green dressing gown has dark and light shifting of green and solitary shape makes use of shifting to identify the outline of the legs.
Contour plays an extremely important and deliberate role in this picture. The painter uses contour to outline and separate one image from some other. It is due to the careful and specific use of contour that the painter is able to give the picture a realistic, life-like look. If there were no important line it would have caused the picture to be just a blur of shapes. This method also helps in conveying the people’s expressions and the ones of their bodies.
