The picture frame has many different uses all working towards to same goal, displaying a picture. One use is to hang a picture to a wall; another is to enhance the picture itself visually. The original use of picture frames was to protect and support a painting they a person wished to hang on a wall. A person could nail or screw the picture frame to the wall instead of being forced to puncture the painting which was held within the frames four borders.

Protecting the picture is a second use of the picture frame. A sheet of glass, now Plexiglas, is put over the picture between the borders of the frame. The glass protects the painting, keeping insects from landing on it, dust form settling, and people from touching or harming the picture.

The picture frame does more than just safe guard the picture it protects; it also enhances the picture visually, by adding to its beauty. In some cases the frame itself can be considered a work of art. Woodcarvings are put into picture frames by artists who like to express themselves in that fashion. Metal workers can do likewise by molding designs in to the surface of metal frames, thus adding to the beauty of the painting.

With the invention of the camera not all picture frames hold artistic works of art. Family portraits, baby pictures, and baseball team photographs are placed in picture frames everyday. Basic wood and metal frames are used in the average household because most families can not afford to purchase an extravagant hand made picture frame.

With modern technological advancements the picture frame has greatly changed in the modern household. Electronics have been added to the frames, allowing light bulbs to be put inside. A person's favorite Christmas picture can be displayed with red and green colors around the outside.

The newest advancement in the picture frame industry is the use of digital picture frames. With these picture frames you do not even physically require a picture to be held within it. These picture frames take a digital picture taken from a person's personal digital camera and display it on the screen held inside the frame. Some of these frames can display pictures as a slideshow. This means that they can take several pictures and slowly rotate through which ones are shown on the screen at a particular time.

It would take dozens of normal picture frames to display the amount that a single digital frame can. MP3 audio files can be stored inside the digital frames allowing a person to hear music while the see look at the picture. Some people might say these factors would make the digital frames superior to traditional ones, while others argue it is not comparable because you do not actually get to look at the picture, just its image on a screen. These things are for the consumer to decide, they can say which will meet their needs and their visual preferences.
