A Look At Flash Games And Education Standards

By: Chris Channing

Anyone familiar with the history of Macromedia Flash will tell you that it started out ugly. The animations and games that came as a result of the 1990's were crude and basic in design. Over the years the product has evolved- even to the point where higher education is teaching the platform to students. But is learning the platform worth it- and what can students expect from the experience?

Current Education Standards

There are several technology-based degrees that demand some sort of interaction with Macromedia Flash. Programming students may dabble in ActionScript, whereas graphical arts students will be using the program to animate and draw their designs.

For video game developers and general computer information systems students, there is more emphasis placed on the game development aspect of flash. Flash games have become the new way to relax when a spare minute or two is found. As employers and school officials are finding out, the popularity of flash games only grows with time.

Flash isn't always taken seriously when it comes to game development, however. Many game developers feel the platform is too limited in what it can do. More robust platforms are generally better for aspiring video game developers, but there have indeed been some flash video game developers make full figure incomes from doing what they love most.

Higher levels of learning generally leave Flash behind. There are just simply better platforms for doing what Flash does. Java, for instance, can make impressive online Internet games. Graphics artists are also shifting towards 3D modeling- which is fast becoming a high-paying industry.

The Future of Flash Games

Flash games continue to push the standards each day. Whereas a fully 3D game was impossible just years ago, there have been impressive demo engines that show complete support for 3D operation. While it is unlikely that flash game developers will move primarily onto 3D game development any time soon, it is surely a sign of things to come.

Each day brings more interactivity when it comes to Flash games and the user experience. Making use of a webcam is becoming popular among Flash game developers- who can let users interact with objects in games they create.

Equally exciting is the microphone. This device may be used to issue commands to squad members, control objects, and do a plethora of other things Flash game developers might program in their games.

Closing Comments on Flash Games

It's hard to think what the Internet would be like without Flash games. Thankfully, the persistence of Flash game developers and educators has enabled the industry to thrive under excellent conditions. As time wears on, we can only hope the inspiration passes from generation to generation- and continues to empower our wishes to stay entertained online.
