Mastiff Dog Beginnings

This dog is part of the mastiff breed and originally from Spain. In fact in some parts of Spain this dog is used as a guard dog for sheep and cattle. Noted for having an even temper the Spanish Mastiff is gentle mannered with children. This dog is prone to aggression with other dogs and will not tolerate strangers. This breed of Mastiff is known for being large. They tend to be longer then they are tall, deep chests and long legs. They have a deep muzzle, large head and of course the iconic mastiff dewlap is present.

Dewlap is what? Loosely hanging beneath the chin and over the topof the chest are fold or folds of skin. This serves primarily as a deterrent to predators. It works by preventing a would be predator from sinking it's teeth into this most vulnerable part of the dog's anatomy. The coat on this breed tends to be very dense. With colors that range from fawn,lemon,wolf gray and black and white. The coat's main function is to protect the dog from weather extremes.
