A Canine Retrospective: How We Got To The Nfl Dog Collar

By: david

Take a look at your dog, looking past the Nascar dog collar and the bandanna around its neck, and what do you see? Many people see a friend, a loving animal, a pet, or a companion. Others might see an intelligent animal. Regardless of how many NCAA dog collars and NFL dog collars you own, your dog still doesn't care much about football..unless you're playing in the backyard and they can join in. No matter how much you talk to your dog, most of it is just noise in their ears. That being said, the fact that we can form meaningful relationships with these animals is directly related to the similarities between humans and wolves, dog's ancestors.

Once upon a time, wolves and humans lived very separate lives, and the meeting of the two was certainly not a cheerful event. However, some 12,000 or 14,000 years ago, a shift occurred that resulted in the domestication of a few wolves, that slowly led to the evolution of dogs. Certainly, there are still many wolves in the wild, and you will notice that certain breeds of dog bear a more striking resemblance to wolves than others do.

We don't know how dogs first entered into the human arena. It may have been that a litter of orphaned pups were taken in and raised by humans. Given that mummified dogs have been found in ancient Egypt and that similarly early human-dog burial sites were found in Germany, we know that this was among the earliest animals to be domesticated. The benefits for both species were clear- humans had no trouble providing for the basic needs of the dogs. Shelter, food, and a place in society was a pretty easy thing to exchange for the skills of hunting, tracking and guarding that the dogs had to offer.

Our original arrangement with our canine friends was very much one of business and necessity. The world is a big place, and having animal allies was something that humans needed quite desperately. Today, our need is still there for these animals, although they now serve a much more social function for many of us. Today, you are just as likely to find a working dog herding sheep as you are to find a lap dog whose sole purpose is to keep you company and entertain you.
