4 Tricks For Poker Chips

By: Thom Riemersma

You know poker inside and out. You know all the best starting hands, you know all the sure fire tells, and you can play trash cards like they're the nuts. But the one thing you can't do is look cool at the poker table.

You've seen those guys on Travel Channel on Wednesday night. They sit there playing with their poker chips almost without though. They shuffle and roll and butterfly and man don't they look cool doing it?!

Looking cool is what poker is about. The people who play think a lot of themselves; they try their best to give the impression of being classy players. A common way to do this is to do a few tricks with your poker chips. Here are a few easy ones that you can easily get the hang of.

The Pullover

This is similar to the shuffle. Gather 6-8 poker chips, in a stack and put your hand over the chips. Your thumb and pointer finger will be on one side and the other fingers on the other side. Split the stack and place one half aside. Take the remaining and with one fast move put it on top of the you left aside. This will just need a little practice until you can do it quickly and easily. How's that for a cool trick?

The Finger Flip

Another fun trick is the finger flip. This is an easy one that is nevertheless impressive and will make you look cool in front of your friends. It is just making one chip jump over a small stack of poker chips. For the best success start with 3 chips.

So how do you do this? Take a small stack of 3 chips in your hand. Place your forefinger and thumb in the center of the chip, with the rest of your fingers at the side. Using these fingers glide the back 2 chips downwards using your thumb to support them and prevent them from falling. When they slip down make the front chip jump to the back with your forefinger. Remember that this little ploy takes some practice, so perfect it before you show it off to your friends.

The beauty of these two poker chip tricks is that they're simple and repetitive so you can sit at the table and fiddle with your chips to your hearts content. When you get really good at this, we'll move on to lesson two: Irritating your friends for fun and profit.
