30 Ways To Reduce Your Spending

By: Judy Turner

Are you feeling overwhelmed with the high cost of living these days? If you think it is impossible to cut back any more than you already have think again. Here are 30 different tips to cut expenses. Even if you followed a few of them you could find that it is possible to make your money go further.

1. Cut back on energy costs whenever possible. Hang clothes instead of using your dryer whenever possible (outdoors in nice weather and inside on racks during bad weather). Use energy saving CFL lights. Get in the habit of turning off lights and appliances when you leave a room.

2. Instead of going to the movies rent or borrow one. If you must go to the movies go to an early matinee and save some money.

3. Instead of meeting friends at the coffee shop or bar, call them home. Potluck dinner parties are a good idea.

4. Carry your lunch to work.

5. Share rides to work with co-workers or use public transportation.

6. Go generic on prescription and over the counter drugs whenever possible.

7. Make a list when you go grocery shopping and stick to it. Use coupons on items you normally buy and try to shop on double coupon days. Stocking up on non perishables or items that can be frozen is also a good idea when they are on sale.

8. Try to limit long distance calls to nights and weekends unless you have an unlimited calling plan.

9. Start saving your spare change. You will be surprised at how fast it adds up.

10. Never pay full price for clothing. Check the sales flyers in your Sunday paper. Why pay full price on a pair of jeans at one store when another store is having a sale?

11. Can anyone really afford cigarettes anymore? For the sake of your budget and your health now is a good time to quit.

12. Install a water saver type shower head.

13. Save money by working out at home. Rent or borrow an exercise dvd before buying to make sure you like it.

14. Keep up on maintenance to extend the life of you car.

15. Dollar stores are a great place to stock up on items such as wrapping paper, gift cards, gift bags, etc.

16. If you're paying a high interest on a mortgage or credit card - refinance it, change it or consolidate your debt to save on interest.

17. Eat out less. Try to keep stocked up on the ingredients for quick meals to keep from going through the drive-thru on days you are just too tired to cook.

18. Don't be afraid to ask for a deal when buying large ticket items such as cars and furniture.

19. If you're paying a high rent, move to a cheaper place.

20. Try Freecycle.org for getting and receiving unwanted items for free. One man's trash is another man's treasure!

21. Subscribe only to the TV channels that you watch and cut out the rest.

22. Do your own manicures and pedicures. Color your hair at home.

23. Start a savings account just for emergencies. Start small like $5.00 per week.

24. Dry cleaning can eat up a large portion of your monthly budget. Try to add more items to your wardrobe that you can wash yourself.

25. See if you can get a better price on insurance. Some companies will give you a deal if you carry all your policies (car, homeowners, etc) through them.

26. Drink less soft drinks and more water. Not only will it save on your grocery bill but it is also better for your health.

27. Have a yard sale. Not only will you make some extra cash but you will also get rid of excess clutter.

28. Don't be late in paying your bills - the interest can be killing.

29. Consider planting a garden. Produce such as zucchini can be shredded and frozen for future recipes. Find information at your local library online on how to get started.

30. Know when to splurge. Cut back on the trivial things that eat up your paycheck and you can splurge occasionally on something fun.

Whether you implement some or all of these tips or even come up with a few of your own, finding creative ways to stretch your budget will really pay off financially.
