3 Common Types Of Poker Chips

By: Thom Riemersma

There are literally thousands of poker chips from which to choose. A quick search of "poker chips" on Yahoo! Shopping yields over 29,000 results. But when you get down to it, there are three major types of poker chips available to the aspiring poker pro. These chips are either plastic, composite, or clay. Each type of chip has it's own pros and cons so selecting the right one depends on why you want to buy poker chips in the first place. Here are the facts to help you decide which type of poker chip to choose.

Plastic

Plastic are on the bottom rung of the poker chip ladder. They are just a means to an end and will not win any praise from your poker friends. Added to this you cannot do any fancy tricks with them. They are available at Wal-Mart or any chain store. They are cheap and easily disposable.

They are for the one time only poker party and are useful only for the occasional poker player.

Composite

For price and durability, nothing beats a composite poker chip. These little guys aren't porous like clay chips are so they're easier to clean. They also don't wear out like clay chips do. A good set of clay poker chips that are well cared for will last about five to six years. A good set of composite poker chips that are well cared for will last a lifetime.

So what's the downside? Composite poker chips just don't feel "real". The don't feel like casino poker chips and they sure as heck don't sound like them. For a true poker aficionado, composite chips just seem empty.

Clay

These are the most elite chips you can get. The poker pros use these, and of course all casinos will use these exclusively.

So what is the lure of these chips? The look and feel of them is enough to set a poker lover's heart racing but the sound will really be the pinnacle of excitement.

There is no doubt about it clay chips are time consuming and expensive. They will require oiling and hand washing every couple of months, in order to prevent deterioration. With extremely good care these chips will last around 5-6 years. But if you neglect to do this you will just have a heap of dust in about 1-2 years. It is very important to take care of your investment.

Your intended use of your chips will determine which of these types you need. Are you going to host poker games at home on a weekly basis, or just throw a one time only poker party. Take all your needs into consideration before you purchase.
